Education Programs
Program price includes admission to the Museum so that students and teachers may enjoy the various galleries before or after the program.
Cost: $130 per school group (up to 20)
Additional students: (aged 12-18) are $6.00 each
Additional Children: (aged 5-11) $3.00 each
Adult supervisors: free at a ratio of 1:5

SALTY SEA SCIENCE
Water is essential for life, yet this amazing commodity is misunderstood, abused and in danger of running dry.

This kitchen sink science program leads students through a series of entertaining and enlightening experiments that illustrate the unique nature of water and instill a special appreciation of this magical compound.

Duration: 60-90 minutes
Grade Level: K-6

PIRATES and PRIVATEERS
Follow the change from privateers to pirates as war time raiders became outright thieves. This enjoyable program deals with tactics, weapons, lifestyle and the consequences for pirates who were caught.

Duration: 90 minutes
Grade Level: K-3

  • Draw simple interpretations from personal experiences, oral sources, and visual and written representations.
  • Describe how physical environment influences human activities.
  • Demonstrate understanding of money as a means of exchange.


CAPTAIN COOK and THE AGE OF DISCOVERY
James Cook ranks among the world's greatest explorers and mapmakers. The history of long distance travel by sea, the science of navigation and the clashes between cultures are all discussed in this balanced program.

Duration: 75 - 90 minutes
Grade Level: 4-5
Curriculum Connections:

  • Demonstrate understanding of timelines.
  • Demonstrate understanding of factors that influenced early exploration.


HUDSON'S BAY COMPANY and the FUR TRADE
This program explores the business of Canada's oldest company and its powerful effects, both on First Nations and on the development of Canada itself.

Duration: 90 minutes
Grade Level: 4-6
Curriculum Connections:

  • Compare bartering to a monetary system of exchange.
  • Identify economic and technological exchanges between explorers and Aboriginal peoples.
  • Demonstrate an appreciation of contributions of Aboriginal peoples, the French and the British to the development of Canada.


GHOSTS at the MARITIME MUSEUM
This enlightening journey traces the development of Victoria, Bastion Square and the old courthouse. In Bastion Square and the galleries of the Maritime Museum, hear the stories which have let many to believe the building is haunted.
This program is available only in October.

Duration: 90 minutes

MUSEUM GALLERY TOURS
Maritime History

These tours feature aspects of British Columbia's rich maritime heritage, both naval and commercial, from the age of the Great Voyages of Exploration to modern times. Enjoy seeing the Museum's outstanding collection of shop models.

Duration: 90+ minutes
Grade Level: 4 and up



BIRTHDAY PARTIES
Let the Maritime Museum staff organize your child's next birthday party! Bring your group of up to 12 children to have a fascinating and educational experience with our interpretive personnel. All you have to supply is an eager group and your own cake and refreshments. Parties are available with either a Pirate or a Mermaid theme.
Duration: 120 minutes


Pirate Party
The young pirate apprentices will learn about the history of pirates and privateers in our first floor gallery, climb to the top of our replica crow's nest, and be taken on a treasure hunt throughout the museum with an experienced staff pirate.
Recommended Age: 6-12
Cost: $150.00 including GST

Mermaid Party
A costumed interpreter will lead the young mermaids through some of the history and folklore surrounding these fabled denizens of the deep, from Sirens to Selkies. The group will play an active mermaid game and each participant will get to make and take home their very own Sailor's Valentine!
Recommended Age: 5-8
Cost: $150.00 including GST

Mermaid and Pirate Party
Get the best of both worlds with a combined party! Our very own mermaid interpreter will tell some 'tails' of mermaid and pirate pasts, conduct games in the Courtroom, show the kids how to make Sailor's Valentine's and give out balloon swords to take home!
Recommended Age:5-8
Cost: $200.00 including GST




SLEEPOVER PROGRAMS
Why pay for high-priced hotel accommodation; try an overnight stay at the Maritime Museum! Customize your visit with any of the available programs. This experience includes a feature film in our courtroom theatre and a continental breakfast.

Duration: Program begins at 6pm and ends at 9am.
Cost: $50.00 per student, including GST.



MUSEUM WITHOUT WALLS
Bringing the Museum to You

The MMBC is now offering programs that can be delivered in the classroom, library, boardroom, or just about anywhere else a class or group meets. All programs are delivered by MMBC programming staff.

Cost: $150.00 per group, including GST. Additional mileage costs may apply.
Group Size: 30 maximum

HARDTACK and MARLINSPIKES
Life and Work Aboard Ship

Learn about shipboard life on the long and arduous voyages to Victoria's harbour in the late 19th century. What were sailors expected to do? What tools did they use? How did they live? What did they eat? What did they do for fun?

Duration: 75 minutes
Grade Level: 4-6
Curriculum Connections:

  • Analyze how people interact with their environments in the past and in the present.
  • Analyze the influence of technology on life and work.
  • Describe the daily life, work, family structures and gender roles in Canada and the world.

Three Tales of Women at Sea

Sail back in time and learn about women whose lives were changed by their journeys at sea. Learn what life aboard ship was like for women, the role they played in exploration, immigration and at times of war.

Duration: 60 minutes

  • Select and summarize information from primary and secondary print and non-print sources, including electronic sources.
  • Identify the changing nature of families and women's roles in Canadian society.

Immigration on the BC Coast

Through the exploration of key events on the coast over the past two centuries, examine the factors which drew immigrants to British Columbia, and the social, economic and political challenges they have faced in Canada.

These tours feature aspects of British Columbia’s rich maritime heritage, from tales of ghost ships haunting the Vancouver Island coast to the harrowing round-the-world voyage of the Tilikum to the design of our 19th century courtroom, the Maritime Museum has much to offer. Tours can be customized to fit the interests and timeframe of your group.

Cancellation Policy
Museum policy allows cancellations up to 14 days before the scheduled booking without penalty. Cancellations made within 14 days of the booking will result in a charge of $45. If a program is cancelled within 7 days of the scheduled date, the full cost of the program will be charged.
